Bad memories or trumas from the past are repressed, i.e in the house of wax, you see a flash back of them as children. The murderer had an unloving childhood, which clearly had a knock on effect on him as an adult, becoming the antagonist in the movie, and not really comprehending his actions. These repressed memories 'exclude their desires and impulses, 'wishes, fantasies or feelings' from one's conciousness and subduing them into the subconcious' this is seen as a defense mechanism. If this develops and the person develops neurotic symptoms, they lash out in anti-social or in a self-distructive manner.

Good Danya. How might the concept apply to the audience of horror films? Does horror allow them to revisit their own repressed feelings thoughts and desires?
